@THE_MAKEUPMAMA When I decided I wanted to do this series, Sophie was someone I really wanted to interview. When I started my YouTube account she was in a group of girls who did a collab with me almost a year ago (here)- they all had hundreds of followers and I had like 10 – I felt a real support from her and the girls, and since then Sophie has continued to watch, comment, like my YouTube and Instagram content – to me, she’s the real deal when it comes to being the in beauty community and doing this to truley engage and support fellow beauty junkies! Sophie has over 600 followers on YouTube and over 1300 followers on Instagram and fits her social media life into her brand new job of being a new Mum! She talks to me about being genuine, collaborating with others and being an anti-Mac girl…
As we ask everyone – can we have the first 5? Who are you, what do you do, where you are, when did you start and why?
I’m Sophie from Australia, I make YouTube videos, mostly makeup related, and have an Instagram account, @the_makeupmama. I started March 2017 but took a 6 month break when I was pregnant with my son as I ended up with a lot of all-day sickness … not just morning! I really started doing my socials again seriously in February this year . I started because honestly I just love makeup and loved making videos and sharing products I love… so figured why not! If I decided it wasn’t for me or didn’t fit into my new life, I could stop. I had nothing to lose.

Congratulations on your baby boy! How do you fit social media into your every day life?
I don’t put pressure on myself. I use to do it on the weekends but now being a mum, I do it when my son naps. I probably spend 1-2 hours a week on Instagram and 3-4 hours a week on YouTube.
What is your favorite piece of content to create?
On Instagram I love doing product flatlays, they are just so aesthetically pleasing to look at. On YouTube my favourite is the good old voice over tutorial.I love sitting down, zoning out and creating a makeup look.
What has been your most successful piece of content you’ve created? What makes content successful?
It was a dupe video for the ABH Modern Renaissance eyeshadow palette, I think just creating something people want to see and are interested and being relevant. Some of my videos get no views at all and others get lots!
What was the first brand or sponsorship you worked with and how did it come about?
I haven’t had one yet! Ive had some brands approach me but I haven’t been interested in their products and I’m not to take a sponsorship or work with a brand I’m not keen on.
How did you develop your on going relationships with people you have had collaborations with?
I think just being genuine with people and keeping in touch. Also truly supporting other people and not following just for a follow back. I’ve never been big on commenting as I am a little more reserved (something I am working on) but I always try to like content, view videos and support people I have collaborated with. Even though I don’t always comment I will always watch, thumbs up and like on Instagram.
Do you have any tips for people wanting to take their social media channels into influencer lifestyle or career?
I guess just be consistent and be patient. It all takes time. Oh and don’t be fake. Be genuine, follow because you like someones content, not so you get the follow.
What is your filming set up like?
I film in my spare room. I have a ring light for lighting/ natural light and a Canon 700d for my camera. It’s the same as when I started my journey. I changed rooms recently though and can’t get the lighting right in this room so may have to get more artificial lights.
What apps/programs do you use the most to create your content?
What has been the high and low of being on social media?
Highs are just following some awesome people who are talented and have similar interests. Lows would be all the algorithm changes.
Who have been your biggest influences on social media?
I love Brittney Saunders and her no BS approach, I also love Nicole Renee Cutler‘s videos as well. She is so genuine and just speaks her mind, her opinions are truly her own. Lauren Curtis is someone I followed early on who definitely inspired me.
If social media died tomorrow what would your next path be creatively (or professionally)?
I would maybe get off my backside and do my makeup artistry qualification and start doing people’s makeup as well as my job which I love (althought I am on maternity leave currently!)
