Series 1 Episode 4 – @makeupanzy

@MAKEUPANZY This week’s interview is with Anna Pettersen. She is a Norwegian living in Australia and creating cut creases and halo eye looks that Instagram is going crazy for! She’s taken her distinct makeup style and grown a large engaged following in a short time with reposts from her favourite brands and skills that make us want to follow so we can see what comes next! She has taken the time out of her busy social media and university life to talk to me about gaining the attention of Anastasia Beverly Hills, taking her makeup across the world and how she gets those close up snaps…

Hi Anna – let’s kick things off with the first 5 – who are you, what do you do, where are you, when did you start and why

Hi! My name is Anna and I run the Instagram account @makeupanzy where I mostly post pictures of eye makeup (cut creases and halo eyes are my favs!) besides my everyday life as a student. I’m located in beautiful Brisbane, however I just recently moved here all the way from Norway! I started my account early January 2017. My friend had a banging account that I loved (and still do), and she encouraged me to start my own so I did!

Welcome to Australia! With your move how did you decide what makeup to take and what to leave behind? Did you choose things based on your social media account or based on what you would use?

Choosing my makeup was a struggle. I went with whatever I used the most, but I also took into consideration what I would get the most looks out of and my favourite products. I left behind quite a lot, which I sent to my friends and gave to my mum.

I was actually forced to leave a lot more behind on the airport as well, since I had excess weight in my carry on. I had packed a ridiculous amount of palettes in my bag. One after one I shamefully removed an eyeshadow palette, which was heartbreaking, but my dear parents sent me the palettes after a while, so I have all my favourites now luckily.

What was the first brand or sponsorship you worked with and how did it come about?

I am still in denial about this but it was Anastasia Beverly Hills, and I had under 1000 followers! I remember scrolling on my phone one morning on the way to the gym, and the notification suddenly popped up on my phone “@anastasiabeverlyhills mentioned you in a comment: ….” and I SCREAMED. However I was so happy I got reposted by them and I was on cloud nine. I was literally the happiest girl for days. Then I remember a couple of days later I was studying for an exam back in Oslo, and I got a DM from a girl named Hannah saying the worked for ABH and would love to put me on their PR-list. I thought someone was trying to scam me at first, so I left the message hanging, did some research and flipped out when I found out she really was the PR-manager. I still think I was extremely lucky, and I am so so grateful. They are an amazing brand to work with.

What has been your most successful piece of content you’ve created? What makes content successful?

I think my most successful picture, engagement wise, is a picture I have of this purple, white and gold look with bright blue inner corners, currently at 9 852 likes and a reach of 110k and I can’t believe the amazing response that post got. I’m still shocked.

However I do have a picture that got reposted by @shophudabeauty once and I think that’s pretty cool. It didn’t have the best engagement, but I got reposted by an amazing brand which I love.

I think successful might mean different things to different people. For me, a successful post would mean a post that got a brand’s attention or that got a lot of engagement. I love to check the insights on my photos too and see if people saved the post, if they do – that makes me very happy. There is something about inspiring others that makes me feel so happy.

Hey guys I’m back, thank you for being so patient w/me. Here is a look from the @bhcosmetics Weekend Festival palette – the pigment and blendability in this palette is spot-on! I can’t wait to create more looks with it 😍 I’m sorry for the quality btw, I know it’s not quite there in this pic😩 _______ Products used: @anastasiabeverlyhills #dipbrow pomade, dark brown @bhcosmetics Weekend festival eyeshadow palette @bhcosmetics Loose glitter in Pearl, I used the tiniest amount @shophudabeauty @hudabeauty Samantha lashes _____ #anastasiabrows #abhbrows #anastasiabeverlyhills #bhcosmetics #bhfestival #hudabeauty #shophudabeauty #wakeupandmakeup #undiscovered_muas #makeupforbarbies #fakeupfix #universodamaquiagem #norvina #shophudabeauty #hudabeauty #hudabeautylashes

How do you fit social media into your every day life?

I just fit it in whenever I can. I go to university, so if I have too much to do there then I take a break from social media. I try to engage with photos, like and comment when I’m on the bus etc. Some weeks I might have extra time and then I try to do new makeup looks 2-3 times a week, however this term has been quite stressful, but I’ll have a lot more time to focus on my Instagram from July. I am even thinking of starting Youtube then… I’m excited to see how that turns out!

How many hours a week do you work on your social media?

I don’t really know, since it can vary so much from week to week. It’s not a job for me (yet), so I don’t set a certain time. However I do know I need to put in more effort in it, and I can’t wait to start doing that!

Do you have any tips for people wanting to turn their social media influence into an income?

I don’t make an income yet, however my only tip if you want to do social media is: DO IT! You don’t have anything to lose, but everything to gain. It is so much fun and your skills will improve so much. I am so happy I started @makeupanzy.

What is your studio set up? What did you use when you started your social media journey?

I have a built in desk in my room, so I just sit there and do my makeup. I use the Sony A5000 camera now, and I also have a ring light. Recently I bought an Ikea drawer to keep my makeup in as well. When I first started, I just sat in my bed with a table lamp pointed in my direction, and took pictures with my iPhone 6. Good times!

What apps/programs do you use the most to create your content?

As far as programs, I don’t really use too much. I use FaceTune and the Instagram app itself, if I do a video I use iMovie on my macbook to edit.

What has been the high and low of being on social media?

The high is definitely the opportunities you get and the people you befriend. I have met SO many people through all of this, which I am extremely grateful for, and I am so lucky to work with many amazing brands. The low is definitely the hate comments you get, and often I get stuck in this mind where I feel awful about my content, comparing myself to everyone and end up feeling like just deleting my entire profile. Luckily I haven’t!

🔪 CUT CREASE 🔪 Sphere is definitely my favourite shade out of the Prism palette. Its beautiful as a inner corner shadow, on the eyelid and blended in the crease. I were so intimidated by sphere at first but now it’s one of my most used eyeshadows. 😍 So unique and versatile. Who have been your biggest influences on social media and what makes you want to follow an account?

To be honest, I am not too fussy about their feed, colours etc. I just like sharp pictures and I look for skills. If I see something that inspires me I am likely to follow that person.

My biggest inspiration is this girl I follow, @ayeeshabx. Her makeup looks are out of this world and she always posts amazing pictures.

If social media died tomorrow what would your next path be creatively (or professionally)?

I am studying business with a human resource management major, so something in that area is my dream job. We’ll see where my journey takes me, though.

Who would you like to see me interview next?

Nicole Tait! Her skills are incredible.

Thank you April for wanting to interview me, I’m honoured! I hope you got to know me a little better, and I can’t wait to see your next interview!

No, thank you Anna! Mwah!
