Series 1 Episode 8 – @guiltyobsession__artistry

@GUILTYOBSESSION__ARTISTRY Tameika McBride is a triple threat. Makeup. Hair. Spray Tans…. Boom! She is an Adelaide based qualified makeup artist for over 6 years who I have made friends with over social media starting off in the beauty Facebook group ‘The Makeup Social‘ and flowing over chatting and supporting each other over on Instagram. With over 2,500 followers on the gram, she consistently posts client looks, mini tutorials and fun expressive looks she’s creating on herself. Tameika talks to me about being a working Makeup Artist slash Instgarammer, working with The Quick Flick and her plans for when social media dies…

Hello Gorgeous! Let’s start with a bit of an introduction to yourself! Take it away ….

My name is Tameika McBride and I created my makeup account @guiltyobsession__artistry (thats 2 underscores!) few years ago now just posing looks and makeup I brought. I wasn’t trying to be a influencer back then I was just sharing my passion. I am a qualified makeup artist of six and a half years now. I am from Adelaide in South Australia and I started my page like I said earlier first just to post my looks and what makeup I had but in the past year and a half to two years I have been more creative and coming out of my comfort zone to create videos and tutorials for anyone who loves makeup or doesn’t know how to apply makeup.

Have you found as a make up artist, having a social media following has helped you book more jobs? What has been the advantages of having a social media follow as a working MUA?
Yeah I do believe it has helped a lot as I can share client looks and my own and it helps make it easy for my clients to pick what look they want whether its from my page or another makeup artists page which is awsome it also helps me find inspiration for my own looks when I can see other peoples amazing work.
What has been your most successful piece of content you’ve created? What makes content successful?
My instagram makeup videos people seem to love them the most as its not too long yet its detailed and shows how to exactly apply certain makeup products and I think people like the before and after as with me its big difference.
What was the first brand or sponsorship you worked with and how did it come about?
My first proper brand was @thequickflick they reached out to me and asked me to create a video and now me and the owner are actually great friends! I fell in love with her product and I love happily sharing it all the time with my own will to.
How did you develop your ongoing relationship with brands and other people you have had collaborations with?
I showed my support on their social media pages and I also purchased their products and shared them in photos and videos on my pages.

Do you have any tips for people wanting to turn their social media influence into an income?
Don’t give up! I haven’t ever been paid for a post and I’m fine with that, I love sharing products I actually love without being fake and being paid to. I’m working very hard on my socials and I’m hoping maybe one day it could become a job for me!
What do you think makes an influencer trustworthy and how do you think you gain trust from your followers?
I don’t know really you just have to find the people that are honest and people that aren’t in it for the money and truely tell the truth about the products and brands they are showing. I believe in only sharing products that truely work and I love.
What is your studio set up? What did you use when you started your social media journey?
I have my own full studio where I have a full desk set up a Hollywood mirror and a ring light I also have a big window in my room so it bring a lot of natural light in. My camera is a Canon G7X I love it! I also recently purchased a Apple Mac Pro to edit my videos on Final Cut Pro its amazing before I was only using iMovie off my phone its good but much easier having proper software!
What apps/programs do you use the most to create your content?
Final Cut Pro and Facetune. I don’t always use Facetune but when I do its only to soften the skin but I don’t even use that much as I want to keep my work as real as I can!
What has been the high and low of being on social media?
The lack of support some people give you when you always show them support. And the highs are I have made amazing friendships. I’ve worked with some awesome brands and most of all I just get to share what I love doing with everyone and I love that you can post and people all over the world can see it.

Who have been your biggest influences on social media and what makes you want to follow an account?
Way too many to add! But I follow accounts that have clear posts and share their secrets with everyone and people that actually take the time to reply or support you back I also love following others for inspiration.
If social media died tomorrow what would your next path be creatively (or professionally)?
If social media died I still would do makeup as I don’t need social media to do makeup.
That’s the best answer! Lastly – who would you like to see me interview next?
@amymbeauty – she’s lovely and so so talented!
